Happier Birthdays Happen Here
We're Celebrating Senior Center Month
by Marjorie Moore | August 31, 2026

Big birthdays at the Mascoutah Senior Center require big cakes!
It’s rare to show up to a Senior Center in our area and not hear the whole room singing “Happy Birthday” to someone before lunch starts. Whether the tradition includes a sash, a silly hat, cake, or even something special for the table they’re at differs from site to site, but one thing’s for sure. Happier Birthdays Happen Here!
With families being so far flung these days, it’s easy for a day that was once celebrated by loved ones to be a day filled with texts and calls, instead of rooms filled with people. In our 7-county region, we’re making sure that those rooms are full… with over 5,000 people across 15 senior centers throughout our community.
Having someone to celebrate your birthday with is probably someone’s last reason for showing up to the senior center for the first time. Maybe that first visit was driven by a resource fair like the fabulous one we got to go to in Bond County last month. Maybe it was to get signed up for Medicare by a Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Counselor so that they were sure that they were getting exactly what they needed and nothing more. Maybe it was because a friend needed a fourth at their Bridge game. Or maybe they heard the fried chicken was really, really good at the Washington County Senior Center. And for a lot of people someone said Bingo and they said, “When?”

But it’s the laughter, the “I haven’t seen you in years”, and getting 5 calls in an hour by friends that missed you because you didn’t show up one day that keeps people coming back week after week.
Those calls mean more than you might think. For every person gathered around the table, there’s someone else in the community who can’t get to the table. And for those folks, there’s a smiling face coming to their door with a meal just for them. They’re checking in, seeing if anything is off, and making sure that getting to the table isn’t the only way to be a part of the experience.
It’s often the same meal and same warm smiles that you’ll see in the center but brought right to your door when you need it most.
This month, we’re celebrating Senior Center Month because Happier Birthdays Happen Here. And it’s not just the birthdays that are happier. The regular Tuesday when you win the Wii Bowling Tournament. Or the Friday when you realize just how much you have to practice your washers. Or the Monday when you can’t stop laughing with your friends from the quilting group. And of course, somewhere in our 7-county region, you can find a game of bingo every day of the week.
If you haven’t stepped inside one of the 15 senior centers we partner with lately, or maybe you thought you never would, this is the perfect month just to take a peek inside, try a lunch, ask about volunteering, stay for a game of cards. It just might be the best day of your week… whether it’s your birthday or not.
And when you go… be sure to come back to tell us what your favorite thing was about your visit!
